Since June of 2018, Matter Brothers Furniture has donated over $78,000 worth of furniture, rugs
Businesses give new and used furniture, household items, and office supplies to United Way. United Way then distributes these items to local non-profit agencies. The non-profit agencies distribute them to families who have been devastated by disasters.
In the case of office furniture, United Way keeps them to replace badly worn-out desks and chairs.
Non-profit agencies like Child Care of Southwest Florida (CCSWFL), a United Way Partner Agency, typically forgo purchasing office furniture in favor of spending money on their client programs.
Chris Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of CCSWFL, said of a recent donation of office furniture from Matter Brothers, “Child Care of Southwest Florida is beyond thrilled to receive such beautiful office furniture from the United Way. As a nonprofit childcare provider, we focus on spending our dollars on quality programming for the students, so donated furniture and items are typically what our centers use. When our staff received the amazing new office furniture given by Matter Brothers through the United Way, they were so happy. We thank Matter Brothers for their generosity to our community. It’s companies like theirs that indeed bless organizations like ours.”
Matter Brothers began donating furniture because many people in our area were without basic furniture and bedding after Hurricane Irma.
The company is run by five brothers, Stewart II, David, Tom, John and Gary Matter. They pride themselves on being good stewards to the communities they serve and take part in supporting local businesses. The business is family owned and operated since 1976, with five locations throughout Southwest Florida.
“It’s been a true pleasure partnering with the local United Way and supporting the fine efforts of the organization while realizing the positive impact our donations have made on our community,” said Gary Matter. Rich Torrey, Distributions & Logistics Director added, “Working with United Way, in unison toward the same goal, has been very rewarding and something that we plan to be a part of for a very long time. It’s a great feeling knowing we are helping our local community.”
“United Way and our partner agencies are deeply appreciative of the generosity and community spirit of the Matter Brothers. Thank you!” said Cliff Smith, President of the United Way.

Our journey began in 1955 when Stewart Matter Sr. became a sales representative for Simmons Mattress Company. After several years of traveling various states, he decided to open a furniture showroom in his hometown of Ft. Wayne, Indiana in order to be home every night with his family.
After 20 years of success, he decided to move and raise his family in Ft. Myers, Florida. Over the years, his sons joined him and have since grown the business to one of the Top 100 Furniture Retailers in the country.
The United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Okeechobee is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for all people in our community.
